One of the best and simplest ways to do this is via 'Help and Support'. Firstly, make sure you are logged on as an administrator, or you won't be able to do this. Now, click Start, followed by 'Help and Support'. Below 'Pick a task' should be some options. Select 'Use Tools to view your computer information and diagnose problems'. Then, in 'Task', select 'My Computer Information', and then 'View the status of my system hardware and software'. You should be able to see the state of things with regard to your computer now.
For the network checkup, go back to 'Task' and select 'Network Diagnostics'. Then select 'Set scanning options' and select the tests you want to run (Unless you have something specific you want to test, select all of them). Select 'Save Options'. Click 'Scan your system'. Although the information gathered by this tool is not understandable by the majority of computer users, professionals will be able to see what the problem is right away with this tool's output. It can be invaluable.
